Greg Carroll holds a BME degree from the University of Northern Colorado and a MMEd from the University of Colorado. He is currently the Director of Education for the International Association for Jazz Education, a position with responsibility for directing IAJE’s education and outreach programs worldwide. Previous positions have included Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Instrumental Music Director for several Colorado School Districts.
As an educator and performer, Mr. Carroll has earned many awards and honors. He was named the Presser Scholar for the University of Northern Colorado School of Music in 1985; nominated to the Who’s Who’s among Black Men in America (1983); and was named Colorado Jazz Educator of the Year (1997) by the state chapter of the International Association for Jazz Education. He has conducted numerous All-State and Honor Jazz Bands and his ensembles have consistently earned superior ratings and first place honors at festivals around the United States and Canada. His high school and college groups have earned a total of seven DownBeat Student Music Awards for best and outstanding performances in the jazz category.
He has served on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Music Educators Association, the Greeley Dream Team, the Colorado chapter of the International Association for Jazz Education, and the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra. He is currently serves as Chair of the Advisory Council for Canada’s award winning Humber College of Music, and is highly active as an international education consultant. Mr. Carroll has served on the Colorado Department of Education Music Task Force co-authoring the Colorado Music Content Standards, and is a member of numerous professional organizations including the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE), Colorado Music Educators Association (CMEA), Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA), the National Association for Music Education (MENC), National Education Association (NEA), Percussive Arts Society (PAS), American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and Pi Kappa Lambda (National Music Honor Society).
Mr. Carroll has performed with many celebrated jazz artists including Clark Terry, John Blake, Dave Grusin, Don Grusin, Nelson Rangell, Chico Freeman, Bobby Shew, Phil Wilson, Don Menza, Dianne Reeves, Louie Bellson, Gary Foster, Rob McConnell, Richie Cole, Red Holloway, and others. Past professional ensemble experiences include the Hugh Ragin Collective (winners of the 1994 KUVO/Denver, Hennessey/Cognac Jazz Competition), Jazz Spectrum Big Band, Disney All-American College Band, Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Collins Symphony, and the Colorado Wind Ensemble. Mr. Carroll currently performs and records with his group the Midnight Blue Jazz Quartet and is the past director of the Colorado Jazz Workshop. He also is highly active as a performer and clinician throughout the US and Canada.
